Matri Sakhi
A friend in every mother's corner — in her own language.
Metafic designed and built Matri Sakhi for Terre des hommes – India: a maternal and newborn health companion that puts counselling content — text, voice and illustrations — into the hands of frontline workers and women's groups. It carries trusted guidance through pregnancy, birth and a baby's first days, across rural Jharkhand and the Sundarbans, in the languages families actually speak.

The right advice, at the hardest mile of the last mile.
In the villages of Jharkhand and the river-islands of the Sundarbans, a mother's safest months can hinge on whether the right guidance reaches her in time — and in words she understands. Frontline workers carry that responsibility, but paper job-aids, mixed literacy and patchy connectivity make consistent counselling genuinely hard.
Terre des hommes – India needed a tool that could put one trusted voice in every worker's pocket — multilingual, visual, and simple enough to use in a courtyard meeting. Metafic designed and built Matri Sakhi to be exactly that: a calm, dependable companion for maternal and newborn health, made for the field rather than the lab.
Languages — Hindi, Bangla & English
Multimodal counselling messages
Pregnancy, postnatal & newborn care
Jharkhand & West Bengal (Sundarbans)
Health guidance that anyone can use, in any language.
A perinatal counselling library
Guidance that spans the whole perinatal window — antenatal care, postnatal care, newborn care and low-birth-weight management — organised so a worker can reach for exactly the right message at exactly the right visit.
Multilingual by design
Content in Hindi, Bangla and English, written and voiced in the dialects communities actually speak — so the same trusted message lands whether a session is in rural Jharkhand or the Sundarbans of West Bengal.
Voice & illustration first
Every message pairs plain text with audio and hand-drawn illustrations, so literacy is never a barrier. A worker can play a message aloud and let a picture carry the rest.
Made for women's groups
Built around how frontline workers actually run sessions — gathering pregnant and lactating women in a group and walking through health messages together, turning a phone into a shared counselling aid.
Designed for the field
A lightweight Android app tuned for low-cost phones and patchy rural connectivity, with large tap targets and a calm, uncluttered interface that holds up in real working conditions.
Behaviour change that sticks
Counselling content structured around proven behaviour-change communication — repeatable, consistent and trustworthy — so healthy practices around pregnancy and newborn care take root and last.
One phone, one circle of women, one clear message.
Gather the group
A frontline worker brings pregnant and lactating women together and opens Matri Sakhi on a single shared phone.
Play the right message
She picks the message for that stage — text on screen, the same words in voice, and an illustration everyone can follow.
Reinforce healthy practices
The group discusses, questions are answered in their own language, and the same message can be replayed on the next visit.
“Acting hand in hand with children to uphold and protect their rights.”
Terre des hommes – India has worked alongside children and families since 2008, with a health programme centred on maternal and newborn care through the perinatal period — supporting government health staff, frontline nutrition workers and the mothers themselves. Matri Sakhi is one of the digital tools carrying that mission into the field.
